School of Communication at SFU

The School of Communication at SFU has long regarded "communication for social change" and "engagement with the community" as key parts of its mandate. It's no coincidence that right from our school's founding in the 1970s, members of the school participated in the formation of Vancouver Co-op Radio. The achievements and importance of independent and community media, as key components of a diverse and democratic mediascape, has been the subject of recent graduate student and faculty research. It is also a topic highlighted in the annual Media Democracy Day that our School has co-sponsored since 2001.

OpenMedia is an award-winning community-based organization that safeguards the possibilities of the open Internet. We work toward informed and participatory digital policy by engaging hundreds of thousands of people in protecting our online rights.

Canadian Association of Community Television Stations and Users (CACTUS)

CACTUS was created to ensure that Canadians have access to media literacy training, production support, and distribution of their messages, stories, and programs on mainstream media platforms, as is provided for under the Broadcasting Act. Historically our focus and the focus of our members has been on the production of video for television. In the digital environment, our vision is that all Canadians should have access to a community-access media centre where they can learn the latest media tools, obtain guidance and production support, and get their messages out, regardless of medium. In this important work, we collaborate with many other associations and organizations with a common interest in promoting community media and democratic discourse.

We are proud to be organizers of ComMedia 2015, and to create an opportunity for community media practitioners from all community media to come together with researchers, government agencies and other stakeholders interested in community media. We believe it is an historic opportunity to share best practices, new approaches, and to brainstorm new policies to support community media in the digital environment. In an environment of intense media ownership concentration and globalization, we believe the ability to find and express the 'local' is more important than ever.

The Fédération des télévisions communautaires autonomes du Québec

The Fédération des télévisions communautaires autonomes du Québec is proud to partner with the Community Media Convergence to promote and develop community television in the country. The conference will be a golden opportunity to present the reality of Quebec independent community television and learn more about the practices elsewhere. The Fédération, as CACTUS and other actors of community media, has at heart to build professional and sustainable practices for community media in the digital age. We believe that to debate and to develop new multimedia, digital and multi-platform policies for Canada with other players in the community can only be beneficial for all our members and community media in the country.
